Minutes and Links

Friday, May 31 news:

At our meeting we decided to support Indivisible’s call for investigations of Trump that could lay the groundwork for impeachment (Bruce will post the details). We decided to make new postcards with the Blue Wave — 1,000 of them arrived yesterday–and we made new buttons for the Quiet Evening at home and future campaigns. We also perfected the links to our fundraisers (see below). PLEASE SEND THESE LINKS around to friends so we can start moving funds towards Virginia.

Item 1: Auction Link (to send an intern to Virginia).

Item 2: Also to support our efforts in Virginia. Copy and paste the information below and send to your friends.

Focus on Impeachment

Impeachment discussions are heating up. At our May 26 meeting, the consensus of our group was to support Marin Indivisible’s Public Statement on Congressional Oversight calling for impeachment hearings if Trump stonewalling of congressional subpoenas continues.  Mueller’s statement Wednesday added pressure on Democrats to take a stand on impeachment. An action item for local Indivisibles this week is to urge Members of Congress to “support Rep. Rashida Tlaib’s Impeachment Resolution (H.Res.257);Barbara Lee is already a co-sponsor, so ours would be calls to support her position. Finally, the May National Indivisible Leah/Ezra letter newsletter makes the case that regardless of the political pros and cons, “it’s the constitutional duty of the U.S. House of Representatives to begin impeachment proceedings.”

East Bay Activist Alliance

We are focused on Virginia for the November election. We are supporting 3 candidates, two to flip districts and one to hold on to one we flipped in 2017.

We are mostly fundraising. This is very important because GOP is energized there, angry because of 15 flips in 2017 House of Delegates races, because of Congressional flips last year, and because of old southern racism that still festers there. They broadcast “black-face” antics of two executive branch, elected Democrats to hopefully get them to step down and at least scare away outside support for VA Dems. So we need to step up and not back down.

We are scheduling events for fundraising

June 15, Block Print Making (notice follows)

June 22, Ice Cream Social

I am sorry I missed the meeting.

Meeting Reminder: May 26th

We meet this Sunday May 26th at our usual time and place (4:30-5:45, 2745 Elmwood Ave) to discuss Indivisible impeachment support, work on our fundraisers and hear updates from our East Bay Activist Alliance liaison Bill. Special spring treat: Sangria!

WHAT HAPPENED TO OUR PRIORITY BILLS?

Yesterday (May 16) was do-or-die day in the legislature with the occurrence of the much anticipated #SuspenseFile hearing. The suspense is now over; the following bills will live to see another day (aka. will be headed for floor vote imminently):

  • AB 392 (Police use of force, non-fiscal and didn’t go to approps)
  • SB 29/ AB 4 (Health4All)
  • SB 200/ AB 217 (Clean drinking water)
  • AB 32 (Ban private prisons)
  • AB 1217 (Issue ad disclosure)
  • SB 47 (Ballot disclose act, this actually skipped suspense)
  • ACA 6 (Free the vote, though this likely won’t start moving until mid-June because it’s a constitutional amendment that’s exempt from deadlines)

ACTION: INDIVISI-CALL IN WEEK NEXT WEEK

Now that we know what is headed for a floor vote, it’s time to let our legislators know how we want them to vote! ALL of our legislators will be voting on all these bills (except ACA 6) in the next few weeks. To pack the biggest punch, we’re coordinating a call-in week next week to drive calls about a different bill every day.

I’m also excited to announce that we now have a patch through number to the legislature that will send you to your state legislators after entering your zip code. This will allow us to track how many calls we all make so please use it for calls! We have everything you need for call-in week in this TOOLKIT including call scripts, sample tweets, and graphics! CALL IN WEEK TOOLKIT!

LAST CALL FOR LOBBY DAY SIGN UP Indivisibles will be there live in Sacramento during one of the most exciting times of the legislative session for our Indivisi-Lobby Day on May 29th! This is the last call for sign-ups! Please RSVP by Monday, May 20th! RSVP for May 29th Lobby Day

Thanks for a great meeting!

We set in motion both of our fund-raising efforts and they will go live later this week.

  1. Everyone will be sent a link to our Political Memorabilia on-line auction by the end of the week so we all can start passing the link on the political mavens we know. Thanks for all the terrific donation and the help organizing the 20 lots.

2. We’ll also be sending everyone the invite link and file with printed summary of the Virginia Primary) for our Quiet Night At Home fundraiser. To start selling these (minimum donation $20), you’ll need to print out the primary info file as a one-page sheet, find your own tea bags, and add one of our buttons (we made the first 60 at our meeting) and put in an envelop. If you do not have any of our great new buttons, please email me about picking some up. They will also be available at our next meeting, Sunday May 26th at our house.
